Enclosure #2
This is a survival shelter built to protect 1 person from below freezing conditions. There is space for 1 smaller sized adult to ootch in and lay flat--no provision for tossing and turning. The walls are 2-3 ft thick and supported by a central beam and numerous "Y" shaped branches. The beam alone can bear the weight on an adult jumping. Two branches bent into hoops form the "bread" for the leaf sandwich that is tied with wisteria vines to make a 1-1.5 ft thick disc-shaped door. Its rather claustrophic with or w/out the door, but I suppose it would be a welcome shelter if you were lost in a winter storm.
Shelter Building w/Ancestral Knowledge
The group has been working to enclose this root system cavity with twigs, leaves, and bark to form a cozy shelter. The construction includes a fireplace (right in photo 2; detail in photo 3) with a buried pipe for ventilation to fuel the fire, a old sink to reflect and radiate the heat, the the beginning of a chimney. Next week, the plan to finish the chimney and add a vestibule and woven leaf door.
